Mike,
One simple fix would be to remove the CD from the drive, when you are
not using it. Having a CD-ROM in any drive will slow down your
performance. For instance, when you open "My Computer", the CD will spin
up, so that your computer will display the CD information, as well as
read some information into cache. If there's no CD in the drive, the
information in "My Computer" will come up much quicker. Also, if there's
no CD, there's nothing to "spin-up".
Again, knowing which OS you're using would be very helpful.
