> I was thinking of getting one of those blood glucose meters

I've thought about doing this myself in the past few months, but there would
be a learning curve involved. Back in the 80's a friend brought her Type I
diabetic boyfriend to visit us. He tested us. After eating, blood glucose
drops before it climbs. After one meal we had, mine dropped to 45. It
stuck in my mind because he said he'd be in a coma if his dropped that low.
It later climbed upward. He tested us at certain intervals. A few years
ago at a health fair at school, one of the grad students tested my bg. I
can't remember the exact number--seems like, but I could be wrong, that it
was in the 60-70 range--but she told me it was too low, told me I needed to
go eat something. If you get a meter, I hope you'll post to the list and
tell us what you find out about your reactions.
