I've had the same experience and I'm a big ol' guy (42, 6', 210#). I used
to always wreck my back and end up quitting. The last time I hit the
weight training wagon though, I had much better luck. In January, I
started the program listed at: www.paleofitness.com with good results. I
think the difference for me is the simplicity of the routine. I only did
a few exercises each trip to the gym.
I am now switching to an all body-weight and isometric routine suggested
by Tamir Katz: http://www.geocities.com/tbkfitness/ I recently got laid
off and decided to splurge for Tamir's $12 program and let my gym
membership slide. When Tamir heard about my being laid off, he sent me a
ten and two singles inside the front cover! What a guy! When she heard
this, a friend asked me, "Do people like this still exist!?" :-)

I haven't lost any weight either, in fact I think I've gained about five
pounds, but my body composition has changed drastically! A lot less fat
around the middle and a lot more muscle all over! I like it! And I love
the extra muscle... now when I go dancing I can do all kinds of crazy
things and it doesn't wear me out anymore, just to name one benefit.

I would recommend either of the programs listed above. Phillip's if you
have access to a gym and Tamir's if you don't. Tamir's is actually
probably the safest as I think it's harder to hurt yourself without
weights.
