well, the states rights idea was that the federal
government was the agent of the states. if your agent
is doing something not to your liking, what do you do?
you fire the agent. when accepting the constitution 3
states actually put in their ratification that they
reserved the right to secede. Virginia, rhode island
and another new england state were the ones. some of
the others assumed it. mass. was the first state to
threaten to secede. it was over a tax on rum that set
the threat off. the reason that jefferson davis,
robert e. lee and a few more confederate generals were
never put on trial was because a new york lawyer had
prepared to defend them and the victorious union
leaders knew there was a chance that the courts would
take away what they had just won on the battle field
by ruling that the states indeed had the right to
secede and therefore the generals were not committing
treason in fighting for their country. if you dig, you
can find history that contradict what is tought in
schools. remember the victors gets to decide what
verson of history is official. makes for interesting
reading if you like history. would be boring if you
don't.
