If I understand it correctly, the DSL speed is determined by your ISP
and not limited by the DSL modem.  So the modem you get will not
affect the speed you see but only it's reliability.  The limits on ISP
DSL speeds are affected firstly by how far you are from the local
Phone Switch.  And some DSL ISP's charge more for higher speeds but
they still can't get my the distance limitations and phone line
quality.  The commonly accepted limits for usable, but slower DSL data
rates, is 16,000 feet.  As you get closer to the phone switch (cable
length) faster speeds are achievable.
