If a clock loses time while the system is running, it's a battery problem.
If it loses time while the system is on, it's a software problem.
The latter is fairly rare.
BTW - If you can change the battery while the PC is running, you shouldn't
lose any BIOS settings. But on or off, be careful of static - make sure you
ground yourself adequately.
