Ian,

First thought:
Is this an ATA66 or faster drive?  Are you using the ATA66 cable?

Other ideas:
If the Mobo will boot to SCSI, buy an ATA66 or better PCI controller.  Most
of these will have their own BIOS to run the bigger drive.

Got an annoying little problem with a 4-5 yr old PC running on an Asus P2L97
