Both scenarios seem plausible to me.
And "enjoying" them, in the case of dairy, might include more than taste or
satiating hunger. I ate some dairy recently, which led to eating it another
couple of times. I had a pleasant mood-food response. Subtle, yes, but
noticeable for a nice smooth feeling. Maybe the casomorphin? Back when I
ate dairy pretty often, I never noticed any effect from it.
