Well, I believe Athlon 1800 XP heat prob is solved.
I did the following things:
1. I updated the GeForce drivers to the latest Win2k set.
2. I installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers.
3. I flashed the BIOS.
4. I reduced the VCore from the 1.75 default to 1.70. (This board runs hot,
which I've also heard about ASUS. So 1.75 was really 1.79. I'm now running
1.74.)
5. I repositioned the cables and what not inside the case.
6. I moved the NIC down a couple of slots from the GeForce.
7. I opened the PCI slot between the NIC and the AGP to see if I would get
airflow.
Last night I ran several SiSoft Sandra Burn-In Tests and it didn't skip a
beat. I also ran the app that would be the most-prone to crash the system --
a remote desktop connection through Netmeeting. No problems.
The case is on and I did not add any extra fans, though I did reseat the cpu
fan.
But, in all this, I forgot the one law of troubleshooting:
Change one thing. Test.
For what it's worth, I still think air flow is a bit of a problem. I plan to
add a larger fan to the front of the case and cosmetically open up the fins
on the front panel to allow more air in to the case.
I think that the most helpful items were:
1. Update the GeForce drivers. I saw the system become stabler right after I
did that.
2. Flashing BIOS/restoring defaults.
3. Moving the cards/cables around.
I hope this helps someone else!
I'll post more if something goes awry, but color me done!
Cheers,
Mike Whalen
