Look around your ham fest flee markets, club auctions, estate sales, etc.
You can often find older synthesized hts such as the Kenwood 2400, 2500, or
2600, which work well, but do not have the now almost mandatory PL boards.
Such units can be had quite reasonably. You may, however, have to re-build
or fabricate a battery pack for them.
