Hi Tom,

I had a 440 for about 15 years and it worked pretty well for me.  With the
VS-1 it is pretty accessible too although the VS-1 is hard to find if it
isn't in the rig already.  Also, these radios are starting to fail and
Kenwood really charges an arm and a leg to fix them.

You might do better, if you are looking at slightly older equipment, to find
a TS-850 with the VS-2.  However, probably the best bang for your buck would
be to go with the TS-570DG which is current and pretty reasonable in cost.
