1. Invitation to People with Disabilities to Participate in a Survey
on
use of Medical Equipment
The reason we are asking people to fill out this survey is to learn
more
about what types of medical equipment people with disabilities have
found hard to use. Later, we will make changes to some types of
medical
equipment, making them easier for people to use
We are looking specifically at four categories of medical equipment:
Diagnostic Equipment:
Monitoring - such as thermometer, blood pressure cuff, cardiac stress
test
Imaging - such as x-ray, MRI, mammogram, ultrasound equipment
Procedural Equipment:
Furniture/Fixtures - such as tables, chairs
Manual Tools - such as defibrillator, dental drill
Therapeutic Equipment:
Drug Therapy - such as syringes, infusion pumps, ventilators
Physical Therapy - such as rehabilitation or exercise equipment
Assistive Technologies (used either as or with medical equipment)
For Mobility/Posture/Manipulation - such as wheelchair, brace, reacher
For Sensory/Communication/Cognition - such as hearing aid, speech aid
personal digital assistant (PDA)
If you have a disability and have experience as a patient with any of
these types of medical equipment, we invite you to volunteer to fill
out
our survey

2. About the Health, Wellness and Aging with Disability Mailing List:
This list is currently supported by:
CENTER FOR DISABILITY ISSUES AND THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS
The Center for Disability Issues and the Health Professions (CDIHP) at
Western University of Health Sciences, in Pomona, California, works to
enhance health professions education, and to improve access for people
with disabilities to health, health education and health care
services.
Western University established CDIHP in 1998 in response to the
concerns
of the disability community, which is one of the nation's fastest
growing and least understood minority groups. The Center focuses on:
--Improving the capabilities of health care providers to meet the
growing needs of people with disabilities
--Increasing the number of qualified individuals with disabilities who
pursue careers in the health professions
--Supporting people with disabilities in becoming more vocal and
active
participants in their health care.
CDIHP sponsors educational activities and curriculum development for
health professionals serving people with disabilities. The Center also
conducts applied research to develop continuing education programs for
current health care providers. These activities are designed to
improve
patient care delivery through advocating basic changes in social and
policy issues affecting the health of people with disabilities.
