Shawn,

Somebody has misconceived things with Sygate. If my memory serves me
correctly in Sygate, if it needs to access something, there is a box to allow
or deny it. There is another box to check to have it automatically write a
rule so it won't ask you again the next time you use that program.

As for Zone Alarm, my comments relate to the free version from two or more
years ago. I think it was version 3X. The problem that I've encountered with
Zone Alarm a couple years ago, when I used it, is that sometimes, the dialog
box that would come up asking whether you want to permit or deny a program is
hard to get to. When I say hard, that means first, you always had to use your
review cursor; either in JFW or Window Eyes. In JFW, which I'm more familiar
with, you then had to left-click the permit or deny button, then you had to
left-click the checkbox if you wanted it to always use that action. That's
the hard part. But, what made Zone Alarm paerticularly exasperating and in my
opinion, undesirable, is that sometimes, this dialog box wasn't accessible
with the JFW cursor. In other words, it was somehow hidden by other windows.
In that case, you couldn't tell it what to do with the program. You had to
either shut the firewall down or re-boot and the next time the dialog for that
program came up, you might be lucky enough to be able to access it.

With Sygate and Kurio, you can simply alt-tab to the program to permit or
deny. This is also true of Norton Personal Firewall.

As for whether the program will work without writing rules for it, I would say
that many times it will, but not in all cases. I had to write a rule for
Echolink, both in my router firewall and in Norton Personal Firewall.

Oh wow cool! So no having to remember all the port
numbers and tell it this, that, and the other thing,
eh? like what I've been hearing about sy gate. That's
cool, think i'm going to like it.
