Mike, you are on track, but if people cannot read why would you expect them to be able to engineer, grin.

My  personal saga with a broken external mic plug in the VX5 sadly illustrates your point.  While I have successfully both   downloaded the data from the radio with the changes I have made over the last two years reset the processor and reloaded the data for the nearly 80 channels I have in the unit, I still find that carrying the manual on the B.N.S. or QT as well as having copies at work and home on the PC and disks is the prudent way to go.  

and the old question of how many internet lister veers does it take to program a radio applies.  

Ah for  crystals or dip switches.  or better yet, diode matrixes
