Chickens left to their own devices eat greens, including grass, and
grain that grows on the grass, fruits, vegetables, but their
favorite foods are insects of various types and worms.  They'll also eat
small rodents if they can catch them.  They're omnivores, like us.

Some people raise "pastured" poultry, basically by raising crops then
letting the chickens run in them (and also eat bugs and grasshoppers that
are there).  But you'd have a hard time finding pastured poultry
in a store.
