Mike, My Wife is not a ham and we're going on vacation this fall and we
wanted to keep in touch with each other at a distance.  I found a couple of
Motorola t6220 frs radios for $39.95 each at Amazon.com.  These  radios have
the conventional 14 channel frequencies in the 462/467 mhz range.  In
addition, the radio has 38 privacy sub audible tones and three scramble
modes.  So you can set the radio so that you can't hear other stations, and
more importantly, other can't understand your conversation.  The t6220  also
has a built in weather radio and weather alert functions.
