Thank you to everyone who made suggestions.
I've now done it, and my hard drive now registers as having 9.52GB capacity.
I still haven't got any idea what the extra partition was, but I ended up downloading DELPART.EXE after scouring the net. It was very easy to use, and deleted the partition without any trouble.(I'll save it just in case I need it again)
When I was left with just the one partition, it still only occupied 40+% of the hdd's capacity, so I thought it best to re-partition it, format, and start again from scratch.
My understanding of partitions is now much better, thanks to everyone, and I feel as though I've learnt so much in a couple of days.
Thank you all again so much.
