Hi,

To add to the posting, I have also done this many times and for the most
part it works out.

A suggestion, before you tear everything apart, take the Driver CD from the
new main board and (pardon the DOS speak) Xcopy the cd to your hard drive
in a temp directory that you can delete later after install is complete.
If using win98 or 95 you should do the cab files also.

The reason to do this is that usually when you change the main board, you
will not have access to the CD-ROM drive for a while as it is finding new
items. If it's on the HDD, then you can point to it and get through it
faster.

Once in a while it doesn't work just right, and you are left with yellow !
marks usually in the controller area. If I can't get rid of them I'll
reload from scratch and then copy the contents of the drive to a directory
from the backup copy of the drive, i make before i do anything else.

I had a nightmare this past couple of days with one. Customer had Epox
8KT3a board, duron 700, 16m video card, 40gig IBM Deskstar 7200
drive(produced may 02) and XP PRO . The board died. Customer wanted to go
to P4

New board the Intel 845PESV (latest just out), P4 2.4/533 cpu, 512
DDRpc2700, nvidia GF4 MX420 64M video card and 330 wt P4 ready power
supply. Made the componet transfer and when it booted up, XP said it found
a change in the Drive controller (plus a litney of other things it could
be) and stopped at a blue screen.

Had lots of probles with the CD-ROM also now, and not before. Tried
reinstalling XP, took forever to load, when it booted up message saying
insert boot media and reboot came up. Low level formated the drive (after
backing up contents to a notebook using an usb box), and reinstalled xp -
same message.

Turned out to be a HARDWARE/Software conflict between Intel board, XPPRO,
and the IBM deskstar drive. Changed to a wd (for testing) and then a and
maxtor drive for customer - no problems- xp pro installed fine.

I then sent an email to Intel describing the components and the problem
found.

So yes, it sould be no problem, but always prepare yourself for the worst.
God Bless America!
