  The 802.11B wireless standard, used by trendnet's current devices (and
many others) use signal bands in the 2.4GHz frequency range.  This is also a
common range for cordless phones, and may be subject to interference from
microwave ovens.

  Two other factors which may affect usable range are antenna type and
orientation, and broadcast power (of both the base station and the client
adapter...).  Can you describe these?

  Is there any chance that a neighbor has an 802.11b device operating on the
same channel as you are trying to use?
