In device manager, if you check show all hidden devices and then view by
connection, you will be surprised by all the stuff you will find.  I test
lots of hardware and can find 25-30 devices to clean out all  the time.  Be
carefull not to delete devices that are simply not powered up like scanners
and printers and you should be ok.  Remember to backup your registry first
or creat a restore point in case of problems.

Normally, I would delete all CD drives in SafeMode, but either XP
no longer shows "phantom drives" on my system, or I do not
switch things around as much...  You may or may not see
much difference there...  It is worth a shot...
