The consensus of opinion seems to be that my choice of using dual boot
W98SE/Linux is the deciding factor, as pointed out by Yakmakha, Peter and
Brendon.
Seems to me that the best action is to make sure the new system works properly
with W98SE, - and to worry about the next steep learning curves later.
Sorry to say this, - but now I've got a question about soundcard config.
I'll leave this 'till later.
