I like to build my own also.  I start by finding a small computer store
nearby that has a good variety of hardware with all the latest and greatest
parts, and people that really know what they are doing.  Get a motherboard
that will accept the connector from your power supply, and the cards that
will produce the output what you want.

You can build or rebuild a computer with a CPU in the 133 to 400Mhz range
for almost nothing including all the cards, because they are being replace
and discarded by most shops and most of us that build them. Also monitors in
the 12 to 15 in sizes are cheep.  I saw a 21 Sony new the other day for
$300.
