Martha,
You need to resolve the memory slot issue before you tackle the hard disk.
A faulty memory module or using an improper memory module type can lead to
all the errors you are getting from scandisk and format.

The chipset for the motherboard can give you useful clues as to the type and
amount of memory you need.   For example, knowing you have a VIA chipset of
a certain model, will approximately date your motherboard to a certain cpu
generation and year of manufacture, then you can assume memory from the same
generation will be compatible.

Get the memory sorted out, and chances are good the disk will suddenly work
properly.

I've got this motherboard and the numbers on there are:
AI5TH-1.00, but I can't find a manual for it anywhere.
I need to find out how to put the memory chips in the slots.

When I do a scandisk, it stops after 6%, saying out of memory. The 8gig hdd
seems to be full of bad clusters, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to
get past this 6%.
Any suggestions or any one out there that has a manual would be great.
I tried to reformat the hdd but get stuck at the scandisk bit.
