Bingo!
My problem was not exactly as you described, but your solution was right on
the money. I managed to find this check mark under my VPN TCP/IP properties
and when I unchecked it - everything worked fine.
It also solved a second problem that I had - namely a second computer
(wirelessly) networked to mine via ICS also now can access the Internet when
my PPTP VPN is active.
Of all the responses I got on two forums, yours was the one that did the
trick.

ON My Network Places (Right click go to properties)
On Dial-up Connection (Right click go to properties)
Network TAB
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ... Properties
ADVANCED
Take the check mark out of
Use default gateway on remote network
Now access to both VPN and the rest of the Internet work fine.
