I'm glad that someone else knew that Piggly-Wiggly
claims to have been the first self-service supermarket.

When I was working in the space industry in the 60s,
there was a P.W. in the San Fernando Valley,
on Ventura Blvd I think.  Here's the good part:
it was called the Piggly-Wiggly Continental.

For those unfamiliar with LA-speak,
that meant it sold imported groceries.
In fact as far as I knew (and I did the shopping
for my five-man crew) it was the premium
large supermarket in the Valley.

I wish I had a graphic of the front of the store.
