Hahahaha Steve, that's funny !

I've been on the east coast again now for 5 weeks, and have yet to meet
a soul with the exception of the pinheads, who did not react with
incredulty, (if not outright horror and disgust,) that I, especially I
as a woman, would want to cave.....
(or ride the subway even, in some circles )

it's soooo,,,, uuummmm, well, DIRTY and all..... and dark.....
and you have to hang from ropes and stuff, just really dangerous and
everything ;)
and it doesn't matter whether I tell them I work on trailers first, or
that I do toilet partitions, or enjoyed being out on a swing stage, or
that I am a caver...
the reactions are always the same to whichever statement, although the
caver stuff gets the most reaction ;)

"pardon, you do WHAT? isn't that dangerous/unusual/dirty?"
oh, and the inevitable, "What does your husband think about that?"
(of course in all fairness, THAT question is not just asked on the east
coast)

at least she's got YOUTH going for her, and probably doesn't have to
deal with the tagline, "at your age? is that really wise?", like my
ancient self has to ;)

I will say this, in my years in construction I have met an awful lot of
cavers, but most of that time has been spent in the OH/KY area, where
caving is a little more common...
there have been plenty of times when I've pulled into a contractor's lot
or jobsite and seen several cars with bat stickers
