In addition to Ian's note, some internal modems are so called Winmodems.
They rely on the CPU to do some of their work. These type of modems are very
cheap, but not very efficient. Another advantage of external modems is that
if you have a lightning strike the phone lines, your computer is not as
likely to be damaged as it is with an internal modem. A friend of mine had
his computer completely burned out with just such a situation - he will
never again use an internal modem!
