Thank you to Cheri and Joseph for the help. I reinstalled the original
driver "package" even though it is not designed for XP and it works -
without WIA though, but that is not important to me.

WIA can be an issue if you are using camera software for downloading
photos. I had a problem with a Kodak DC 280 using Kodak's software in
Win Me, which also has WIA. Kodak had a small program that disabled WIA
so that I could use Kodak's software. See if your camera manufacturer
has some tiny little program to disable it so you can use the camera's
software. Now I have a Canon S30 and use a Dazzle 6 in 1 card reader to
transfer photo files to my hard drive. Lot faster and no software. If
you do that you can skip the camera's software, and need only plug in
the USB card reader. I don't believe you need drivers for it in XP or
Win Me.
