James,
What type of video adapter does Device Manager say is installed? If it says
Standard VGA PCI (or something similar, I don't have a Win98 PC in front of
me right now), then it is not recognizing the video card and is installing
the standard video drivers. If so, you need to locate video drivers for
this specific card. This driver might work:

Subject: [PCBUILD] Display problem
Dear Sirs,
I have an IBM Aptiva with a Windows 98 SE upgrade. It has the same monitor,
CTX 1765 and adapter card,
Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI as when it was new. The colors are wrong. When I
check Settings, it is set at
16 bits, 640 by 480. I change these to 256 colors and a higher resolution.
I start up again and it
gives the error message:
"There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is
incorrect or the current settings
do not work with your hardware. "
In Device Manager I remove the drives for the display and adapter. I then
at the prompts reinstall them from the
Windows 98 SE update disk. I set the display to 256 colors and a higher
resolution and get the same messsage.
One game, Tyrian, works. Others give the error message that they need the
256 colors setting.
I find no loose connections. What can the problem be?
