CHOMSKY Members:
As many of you are aware, due to the fact you did not received any mail,
The CHOMSKY server is located at St. Johns University (SJU) in Jamaica New
York.
SJU has been completely cut off from the Internet since late last Tuesday
(09/11/2001) until this morning. We were unable to communicate by any of
the usual means. The reason given was that the Internet Service Provider
(ISP), Applied Theory, experienced an outage over the entire region as a
side effect of the World Trade Center (WTC) destruction.
There was no estimate given as to when Applied Theory would restore
service; take my word for it, I was shocked that I did not have a backup
plan for such as event. After all, the Internet was originally designed
to withstand all outages/attacks by rerouting Internet traffic.
Until late last night EST, I had not has successful communicated with the
ISP. St. Johns University is helpless.
Since last week, I have implemented many changes to prevent this type of
disconnect from ever happening again.
The backlog of message is enormous and you will see message come through
from last week.
The flow of discussions will be back to normal soon.
Thank you for your patience and continued support of our discussion forum.
