It would appear from your description that the machine isn't even making it
past the POST (power on self test), and you have no display at all on the
screen. If so, you may want to remove the processor from its socket and
reinstall it if you feel comfortable doing so. I have seen several machines
with failing motherboards exhibit this problem (right down to shutting down
on their own overnight), and often reinserting the processor revives the
machine temporarily. Ultimately the solution was to replace the motherboard
in each instance, after which all was well.
The operating system on the hard drive may not load properly on a different
machine due to chipset and/or hardware differences between the two machines;
if the differences are great enough the os typically will not even load.
