Using a subnet mask allowed Zone Alarm to ignore this intranet, so TCP/IP works now.
NetBEUI was indeed ignored by Zone Alarm, but games don't seem to like it.
Once again, thanks to all who replied. From everyone's input, I have managed to successfully network the two
machines, but...
I have some lockup issues that appear to be related to this intranet and the NICS, but may also be
software-related. Since this thread started here, it may still belong here rather than PCSOFT. Either machine
can play the games on their own without problem, but over the intranet they lock up within a minute. Sometimes
machine A locks up and sometimes machine B does, but only one locks up - the other continues as if nothing
were wrong. However, I suspect machine A is the culprit as it looks up almost every time I use NetMeeting.
I'll list the specs for each machine if anyone wants to try to help me pinpoint this problem.
Machine A: Machine B:
Athlon 1 Ghz Pentium 166 MHz
128 MB sdram 80 MB EDO SIMMs ram
16 MB Nvidia 4 MB S3 Virge 325
2 HDD's 40 + 60 GB Maxtor and WD 2 GB Quantum Bigfoot HDD
It seems possible to me that the multimedia keyboard on machine A might be the problem because the lockup
occurs as soon as I touch a key. ( But I never use the keyboard during NetMeeting, so... )
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Modem Networking?
First, thanks to all who replied - your help is priceless. Now I need more advice.
Here's where I'm at:
Remember I don't need or want Internet access for machine B.
Machine A is still connected to the net through the original Inc, but also has a new Inc, as does machine B.
The two machines are directly connected via two new PCI NICS and a 75' cat5 crossover cable. Using the
networking wizard, I managed to make a connection, and both machines can access the other, but not while Zone
Alarm is running. I've tried adding the IP# to trusted zone but still no go. How can I get Zone Alarm to
ignore this intranet? (Both have a 169.xxx IP#). Running without Zone Alarm is not an option. I need some
basics on getting my games to play as well - should I be looking for intranet options within the games? I just
don't know enough to make this work properly. Thanks in advance once again.
