Does anyone know how linoleic acid (the C18 omega 6 essential fatty acid)
evolved? This fat is high in seeds and nuts.
Crawford and Marsh (nutrition and Evolution) say it originated with
flowering plants, but this does not explain why kelp is so high in it unless
kelp was derived by flowering land plants returning to the sea (which I
doubt).
It is often said that the omega 3 essential fatty acid linolenic acid is
only made in chloroplasts.
