The Canadian natural health magazine Alive had an editorial about
Loren Cordain's the Paleo Diet. I tried to find a copy online but
there isn't one on the Alive website.
This magazine is distributed free in health food stores all across
Canada and is supported by its advertising of health supplements.
The editorial was written by Sigfried Gursche, the founder of Alive
and a herbalist and writer of serveral health books. He called the
paleo diet a high protein/ low carbohydrate "fad" (which I find
bizarre) and said that Cordain should have differentiated between
natural food and refined, processed food. Gursche said that complex
carbohydrates and "whole food nutrition" have never made anyone sick.
I found this article frustratingly dismissive. Gursche didn't even
seem to consider the possibility that eating a grains and legumes-
based diet could cause health problems. I'd like to encourage
Canadians to write to the Editor and share their experience with
following a paleo diet. I wish that people who ran a health magazine
were interested in things that truly made people healthy, not just in
creating a culture that supports the purchase of dietary supplements.
