Happened to drive through Schenksville (sp?) PA-- site of the Flight 93 crash
last week while doing a roadside architecture roadtrip on the Lincoln Highway
in PA. The community definitely senses the importance of the place. The crash
site is really out in nowheresville, in some open fields outside a strip
mining operation. They have a formidable "temporary" memorial, with
professional direction signs, paved access road and parking lot, guardrails,
flagpole, an messages area for offerings from the public, and a tasteful
brass marker with the names of the passengers on it. The County Historical
Society has collected many of the pieces left by the community, and has them
in trust. Volunteers from the community staff the memorial.

I did alright until I started reading the names on the marker, and saw some
of the pictures of the passengers up in the messages area. It's twisting my
heart just thinking about it now. On the analytical side, it was a
tremendously interesting place if only to see the balance of formality, with
parking and guides, with impulse, a big grafitti board with messages from all
over the country. Very powerful.
