OK, consulted with the 7th grade avid reader in the household. Mary Claire was glad to help: "It's so nice to see a young person take an interest in reading." (Hands clasped high, head tilted to the side, eyelashes batting, best teacher falsetto.)
Anything by Lloyd Alexander (even I knew this one...she tore through his stuff)
The Poppy series, by Avi (field mouse adventures, but not cutesy field mouse; have other books titled for other characters)
Animorphs series (K. A. Applegate)
Fudge-a-Mania, etc. (Judy blume)
Purro and the Prattleberries (Suzanne Newton)
Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer) Sci fi
Some of these will be for the "advanced" 2nd grade reader, she advises.
Cheers,
Dan

John Andrew III- 2nd grade- is bemoaning the lack of interesting reading
material-
liked the Hardy Boys concept however even he was aware of how dated it
was, loves sports books, devoured the whole Matt Christopher ouvre-
any suggestions?
