Yes.  I was very surprised to see Reconstruction cited as one reason a
Southern correspondent of mine voted for Al Gore in 2000.  He wrote:

     We have a difficult time forgetting the hardship the Republicans
     forced on the South after the Civil War. We have yet to recover
     from the War and Reconstruction, and there are economic historians
     who say we will never recover.

Early last month was the 125th anniversary of the end of Reconstruction
(March 4, 1877).

Of course, we in the North probably all know guys like the carpenter in
the John Prine song, who "voted for Eisenhower, 'cause Lincoln won the
war."
