I'm not Philip :) but will put in a word here.
The Eades' in their Protein Power and LifePlan books (and Atkins in the
later edition of his book) explain that available, digestible carbs are the
total number/grams of carbs per serving minus the fiber grams. I think they
use the term *Effective Carbohydrate Count* or something like that.

These counts are based on 100gm portions. --Which doesn't do me much good
to try to visualize since my mind thinks in terms of cups and portions of
cups, not weight.
Root vegetables as a group tend to be higher in carbs, though their
individual impact on blood sugar levels varies. They are also a group that,
I take it, are arguably non-paleo.
