Thanks to everyone for their replies and suggestions and will remember
them all if it happens again. I actually got it solved by chance before
I got any replies. It just so happens the scroll wheel on the mouse
changes the slider for the resolution and pressing Enter applies the
setting. After a reboot, everything was back.
