Sounds to me like you have what's called a "stiction" problem. When an older
hard drive is turned off, the head sometimes cold welds itself to the platter
and
it takes several boots to get it shook loose...or a couple of not so gentle taps
on the drive. In a nutshell: your drive is probably on its last legs and
if it is important to you, I'd back up the data and replace it.
