Recently a friend of mine had 3 modems w/ same symptoms at his place of
biz.  He attributed it to power surge also; Verizon found ungrounded
terminals on his line.  He had to replace all modems.

As for winmodems, they're usually cheaper, and always require
windows.  Some may say soft modem, or words to that effect.  Until the
above mentioned incident, it's been years I've used any modems outside of a
laptop in some hotel room (and even some hotels now have broadband
connections).  HTH
