Without getting into technical details (which I'm sort of fuzzy on anyway)
suffice it to say that SCSI has been the recognized leader in speed between
the hard drive and the system. Even with the recent ATA133 standard, SCSI
seems to be able to stay just a step ahead with a 160MB/s bus. Also, you
can daisy-chain up to seven devices on a single SCSI bus, where you are
restricted to two with a single IDE channel. No restriction that I know of
on the number of IDE channels you can have, though another lister might need
to pop in to verify that one.
SCSI has always been, and will probably always be, more expensive. However,
reliability is higher with SCSI. So, you get what you pay for. You used to
see SCSI in all Macintosh computers and in Wintel based servers. These days
you see more SCSI in regular Wintel based desktops (and most new Macs can
use IDE), but most stick to IDE because it is so much cheaper. Plus, with
the faster IDE bus speeds these days, the differences are a little less
noticeable. There are more technical considerations with SCSI, so if you
are thinking of playing with it, let us know and we can go into a little
more depth so you have some understanding of how things need to be put
together.
I hope that is what you were looking for. And, by the way, the only stupid
questions are the ones you already know the answer to. This list was
designed to be a forum for ALL computer hardware users, from the new babes
to the most experienced. Don't EVER think your questions are too simple or
too stupid to be asked.
