When trying to use software in a production environment, not just playing
around but really getting a job done the rule of thumb is to double the
recommended RAM requirements from the vendor.

It actually has nothing to do with being on a laptop. With a modern OS,
using standard office applications and then adding on top of it the VR
software you hit a recommended memory requirement for 256MB really quick,
the additional 256 gives you a lot more memory overhead and helps
tremendously with recognition speed and accuracy.

By the way you also need at least a PIII 500 to take advantage of the
advanced instruction sets in the Dragon Software.

It does become more of an issue with a laptop because typically the sound
card is an integrated component and when load up the processor with
something as memory intensive as VR it really starts to dog.

Lets break down the numbers: Windows 98se runs best with 64MB
Office 97 likes and additional 32MB,
with only a single application open
Dragon likes to have about 64MB
available

So if we add this up we are at 160MB

Here are my recommended numbers for W2K
                                        W2K OS 128MB
                                        Office 2000 128MB (256 for Office
XP)
                                        DNS 64MB

Given the current cost of memory, $125 for 256MB it is not too much of an
issue.

Hi
Could people clarify why exactly so much memory (512Mb RAM) is needed on
laptops when
using VR? Which OS and packages are you specifically referring to?

Thanks
Ian Francis
