Thanks for pointing out that Appendix Loretta.  It's amazing how useful
documentation can be if you can find it.  According to that appendix,
Window-Eyes can be switched into table mode in Internet Explorer and
Acrobat and gives one the functionality that I personally think is about as
good access to tables as a speech screen reader is capable of giving.  It
permits cell to cell navigation, boring down into nested tables, and
speaking row and column headings.  I ttried it briefly in IE and found that
it works as advertized.  I'll try it on PDF if somebody wants to send me a
test sample.

I can't tell you exactly what happens after I've used Acrobat, because it
isn't reproducible.  However I just find that things don't work
right.  Most people who use screen readers a lot learn how to handle
problems when "things don't go right".  Turn offf the application and turn
it back on again, maximize it...  Or turn the screen reader off and back on
again.  When these fixups don't work, reboot.  Such things happen for no
apparent reason, and it  is an unusual day that I don't have to reboot at
least once.  I will not swear that I have such problems every time I use
Acrobat, but it is frequent enough that I now make sure everything is saved
and when possible postpone reading PDF files till last thing in the day
when I turn off my computer anyhow.  Sounds as if  David Poehlman has
similar experience with Jaws 4.5.  But maybe we just have lousy computers.
