Le Trolleybus:

The trolleybus:

Experiments with this vehicle, a hybrid between
the tram and the bus, started in the first years
of the twentieth century, principally in Germany
and Italy, but without real success, primarily because
of their primitive designs.

For example, in an experimental line in Leeds, without
a foot control for the motor, the operator had to
steer with his right hand and manipulate with his
left a series of rotary switches like the ones used
in trams--a rather clumsy arrangement.

Still, in England in the 1920s, thanks to important
technological progress, trolleybuses enjoyed a great
vogue.  Smaller cities, where trams were undergoing
economic difficulties, found an ideal solution in
these new vehicles, which used the central generating
stations and the masts provided originally for trams.
But these vehicles could maneuver in traffic without
the restriction of rails.  They were also almost
silent, and they could accelerate rapidly.

The triumph of the trolleybus seemed complete when
an enormous system was constructed in London in
the 1930s.  The trolleybus vogue spread to the United
States and also to Germany and Italy--probably because
those countries had no sources of petroleum.

Today there are no trolleybus networks in Great
Britain, but there are sixteen systems in China,
a total of 165 in the Soviet Union, where a popular
song was written in praise of them.


The years 1930-1950:

This period saw a three-way competition among buses,
trolleybuses, and trams, but its results were not
identical in all European countries.

In Great Britain, there was, as has been mentioned,
a great proliferation of trolleybuses, but many
cities favored the autobus.

In Glasgow, Edinburg, Sunderland, Blackpool,

Leeds, and Sheffield, transportation departments
continued to favor trams.

modern suspension, comfortable seats, and motors
and suspension capable of higher speeds.

Still, in France, Paris abandoned its trams in 1938,
but large systems remained in Marseille and Lille.
