Then you know how tough it is to watch someone you love die of long-range suffocation.  For that is what is was - a very very long death by suffocation.  She lived for five years after her diagnosis.

Yes, I agree; my mother died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis which is
similar to emphysema but kills more quickly.  I wouldn't wish that on my
worst enemy.

Being around AA for years, I have seen respiratory problems as the result of
smoking impair as many people as alcohol and drugs. I have gain lots of
weight as a result of quitting smoking and a large gut seems to impair
respiration even more. I am glad I stopped before my emphysema progressed.
Emphysema is worst than lung cancer in my view.
