My son is milk-allergic and I have given him epinephrine (as in
epi-pen) several times - he gets severe asthma and the epi opens up
closed bronchial tubes so I can get bronchodilator in there. Epi is
short-acting - about 15 minutes - though the response is felt almost
immediately (within seconds there is relief). As soon as he was
breathing again, I used the inhaler to get the longer-acting Ventolin
into him - then, once he was calm enough, bendadryl to ease other
allergic symptoms (hives, etc.). Understanding the medicines helps a
lot too.
