I know that you already got a lot of responses to this question. Check
the manufacturer's specifications. The main problem with drive
orientation has to do with the motor and spindle bearings. Some of the
Seagate drives had warnings that the warranty would be voided if it was
mounted upside-down. Most modern drives, however, no longer carry such
warnings - better bearing designs I assume. As mentioned in other posts,
it is best to format the disk once it is mounted in its final
orientation.
