When I asked for information on doctors and support groups around
Cleveland, Ohio, I got a scattered response. More people were looking
for the same information than actually had information to offer. Here's
what I learned about Cleveland from the list.

I put this together before 9-11, just never got it mailed until now. In
the meantime, I've found a local pediatric G-I with an interest in
celiac. We have an appointment tomorrow.

There is a Cleveland area support group. It covers a very wide area.
It's run by Cindy Koller Kass [log in to unmask] I talked to Cindy
and she shared a wealth of information with me. She says the group meets
periodically at public locations around the city . east side, west side,
south side. Attendees are from Elyria, Mentor, Akron.

The next meeting has not yet been scheduled. When they do meet, there
are speakers and, in December, a cookie exchange.

I got several responses from people around Cleveland interested in such
a group. I wonder if it would make sense for folks to consider smaller,
more local groups. I live just east of Mentor, in Concord, about 30
miles from downtown. I have a busy life and two children under five. I
don't have time to travel more than 15 minutes away for a support group
meeting. (Thank God for the Internet!) I'd encourage the Elyria folks -
at least four responding - to consider there own group.

I do know that local hospitals are often willing to work with people to
create support groups and provide meeting space. They could even provide
the speakers.

And, that leads me to the doctors. These folks could be the speakers as
well as medical professionals to consult.

As for good CD doctors, Dr. Sivak is terrific. His contact info: Michael
V. Sivak, Jr., MD O, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology, University
Hospital, Mather Pavilion, Suite 1300, 11100 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, OH
44106 216-844-7344

The pediatric GI in Cleveland I hightly recommend is Dr. Tom Taxman.
He diagnosed both my girls, and provided excellent follow-up care. I was

really sorry to move out of the area and have to leave hime. Also Dr.
Rothstein, his former partner (I think former) has a very good
reputation.

I live on the East side of Cleveland, and use Dr. Neil Jacobson
(gastro), in Willoughby. He's on Rt 84,(Johhny Cake Ridge Road) just off
Rt

91. just South of the I-90/Rt. 91 interchange. I don't think he's a
'specialist', but he does understand CD, and can direct you to support
groups.

Also, Dr Bruce Jacobson (Opthomologist) is well aware of CD. His
daughter is afflicted with the disease. There is also a Cardiologist in
the Cleveland area whose wife and daughter are affected with CD. Dr.
Jacobson can direct you this last doctor.

NOTE: If you want this info, email the group and ask.

As far as Cleveland doctors there are not any specialists. I have had to
take a trip to MAYO Clinic to see Dr. Murray who is an expert with
celiac disease. You more or less have to educate a G.I. doctor in
Cleveland about celiac disease.
