From my personal experience, I would say that i815 based motherboards have
trouble using more than one DIMM at 133mhz bus speed. Of course, this is
based on an N=1, but it seems consistent with Intel's efforts to cripple
it's non-RAMBUS chipsets. My experience is with an Asus CUSL2.

I used MemTest-86 to reach this conclusion. It is a downloadable free
memory testing utility. There was one subtest in particular which showed up
the difficulty. This subtest moves a large block of data around in the
memory space, meaning that it involves transfering data back and forth
between the two DIMMS. I think this is where the i815 controller has
difficulty. (Note: Other memory testing utilities don't seem to include a
similiar subtest.)

In any case, you can find Mem Test-86 at
http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/ . It will be the results of sub-test 5
that will be of most interest. Try the test with one DIMM module and
compare it to the results with more than one module. All my DIMMs ran fine
individually in any slot, but not when I used more than one DIMM. Again,
this was at 133mhz bus speed. The problems cleared up at 100mhz.

If any one else with an i815 based motherboard tries to duplicate my result,
I sure would like to hear their findings.

John

Subject: Problem with 256 MB DIMM PC133

Hi,

I have a mobo AOpen MX3S with an Intel P!!!-1 Ghz, harddisk FUJITSU 30
GB, 256 MB RAM (2 x 128 MB DIMM), installed Windows ME.

When I tried to upgrade the amount of memory to 512 MB RAM (2 x 256 MB
DIMM PC133), the PC functions seems to be normal, but Windows freezes or
reboot without any warning.

Have i815E any limitations about this amount of memory?
